"The room was less fancy, and indeed seemed to have been built with the idea of “If this hotel thing doesn’t work out, we can always be student accommodation”, but in its hotel form it was still good."

I stayed there when I was up for the Kraftwerk gig, and I really liked it. If I did something radical with my books, art and clothes, I could probably live in a room like that. It was certainly roomier than the hotel I stayed in in Christchurch recently, which I estimated to be about 8 sq m, with no window. And I actually kind of liked that one, too.

"I realised that the Auckland I left a year ago no longer exists. Occasionally I might feel like I miss Auckland, but it’s not so much a feeling for a place as a feeling for situations (that no longer exist) people (who have equally changed)."

Exactly: a "place" isn't just a geographic location but a social network and milieu.

Hillary was 34 when he climbed Everest. I am 34. What have I done with my life

Didn't waste any of your time climbing bloody mountains, for a start. Keep up the good work.

Is it even possible to BE in love with Auckland? It's my home town, now I'm no longer there I miss the people and certain places within it, but I can largely do without the city.
