Now that I recall, I also played radio feng shui to catch Auckland stations in my second floor Pukete bedroom. Am I remembering correctly that I managed to pull in bFM? I think I did...

I lived in Hamilton 1989 to 1991, and then Auckland between 2001 and 2003, so this post sound so familiar! Driving around in a Japanese-import Volkwagen Golf in the latter period, I was of course also limited to Mai (I don't think I could even pick up Newstalk). I am therefore still uncommonly well-versed in early noughts American and NZ R&B. I hadn't considered Richard's observation, that likely half of Auckland drivers existed on a strict audio diet of R&B and pop hip-hop. So funny.

Even now when I visit Auckland, Nesian Mystik and Ja Rule pops into my head the minute Manukau comes into view just before landing.

Fantastic post - bought back a few memories alright.

- I had an elaborate set up with a wire leading to our TV aerial to pick up 'Hit Radio!' ZM. I was jealous of people living on hills, cos they could pick it up a lot more easily.

- Kiwi FM's Ronnie came into my Dad's shop one time - Dad asked if he was Ronnie, and Ronnie said "YES, I AM, PLEASED TO MEET YOU!" - turns out he talked like that all the time. Fuck, he had a deep voice.

- I did Thursday nights 9-11 on Contact for a couple of years. That was a lot of fun, but looking back, I wish I'd been a bit more relaxed about it at the time, I was in constant fear of being biffed out for being too uncool. The odd person ringing up to say they enjoyed my endless Dinosaur Jr, New Order, Jesus and Mary Chain and Verlaines music selection was much appreciated.

- Really enjoyed bFM when I moved to Auckland, with Graham Hill in the morning and Mikey Havoc in the afternoons. Those were golden times.

- After my OE I got into Radio Sport, but then we kind of <a HREF="http://sportreview.net.nz/2009/04/29/sportreviewnetnz-versus-matt-gunn/" rel="nofollow">had a falling out</A>.

- Nowadays it's Radio NZ National; I like Morning Report, This Way Up, Music 101 and the Arts on Sunday the best.

Ah yeah, those Japanese imports with FM radios that went from 76 up to 90 on the FM band. Mine was a Daihatsu Charade that lost revs every time you turned up the volume. The best marketing move MaiFM ever made (whether deliberate or not) was to grab the 88FM slot - because it was the only radio station half the drivers in Auckland could get. I remember a lot of time in Auckland was spent just stuck in traffic, listening to 50 Cent and Beyonce.
