I'm looking at the Reader's Digest Guide to New Zealand, also by Maurice Shadbolt, and it has pretty much the same description of the Dunedin railway station. Perhaps as a nod to the times (1988) opulence has been replaced by resplendence.

I haven't been to the Dunedin railway station. I feel that I should go there.
